Living in the heart of Europe, in one of the oldest and richest countries, we sometimes feel a need to take in some of the sophistication and fine arts that are to be found all around us. Tuesday evening was such a time. Melissa and I journeyed to historic centuries old Lausanne to take in the fine art of le cinéma. The showing was a foreign film, in a foreign language, with subtitles (French and German).
We arrived half an hour early to guarantee our seats. This was the second week of the film’s showing, but we had tried to see it the week before. At that time we reached all the way to the front of the ticket line before being told it was sold out. This time the theater had a sizable audience of other art patrons, but was not sold out. Tuesday’s have larger crowds, but are the only day we can afford to see a film because admission is half price. (It’s tough being a cultural aficionado on a budget)
An interesting note I read on this film, is that it actually opened a week earlier in Switzerland than in it’s home country. I think this is a sad state of the industry. Just because a country isn’t as prestigious or trend setting with a long history of film, doesn’t mean there aren’t just as many people there that would love to see a film at the same time as the first class countries.
Once the lights dimmed and the previews started the film experience was just like any in America. We didn’t have much trouble with the foreign language because it was English. The film was titled “Avengers: L’ère d’Ultron” from the foreign country of the United States of America.
In other news this week, we found a Mexican restaurant over here and tried it out with two Spaniards. It was pretty good we had tacos and chili. It was interesting to learn that Spain’s culture and cuisine are different than Mexico’s. Such as tortillas. In Spain a tortilla is an egg bake kind of thing with hash browns, while everyone else knows it as the flat bread.
Today, Sunday, we hiked a 4.5 mile trail to the top of Mont Tendre in the Jura range. It has an elevation of 1679m (5509ft) and gives an amazing view of all Lake Geneva. I’ll try to sort through our pictures and get a post up about it Monday or Tuesday.
Happy Mother’s day to all the moms! And happy 86th Birthday to Grandma Mae Johnson!
